One of my favorite races each year is the Fairhaven Runners Waterfront 15k. Fairhaven Runners and the Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department do an excellent job of organizing this race, but what really makes it special is the course. The course is mostly flat so you can expect to see some fast times, yet there are just enough hills to keep things interesting. Plus, the course is USATF certified. While out on the course you will be treated to gorgeous views of Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands, Olympic Mountains and Mt. Baker.
The race starts and ends in historic Fairhaven. From Fairhaven you head out on the roads towards downtown Bellingham and down to the water. Here you run past the marina and do a loop of Zuanich Park right along Bellingham Bay. Then after running around the marina and past the Bellwether Hotel you head back toward downtown Bellingham where you get on the South Bay Trail. The trail will take you right into Boulevard Park and then out onto Taylor Dock where you run out over Bellingham Bay. From Taylor Dock it is just under a half mile back into Fairhaven and the finish line along side the Village Green (click here for a complete description of the course). Once you have crossed the finish line you can head up into the Village Green and enjoy a great post race celebration with live music and a large selection of treats.
The year was the 4th running of the Fairhaven Runners Waterfront 15k and with just under 600 runners and walkers it was the biggest field so far. This year’s participants were treated to weather that was just as beautiful as the scenery along the course. The sunny yet cool weather with only a slight breeze was perfect for running some fast times. The overall winner was Charlie Sunderlage in 50:45.2 and the top female runner was Katherine Moore in 58:01.1 (for complete results see the Athleteslounge.com).
