Me running the 2007 Fairhaven Waterfront 15K

My name is Steve Grichel and I live in Bellingham, WA with my wife, Cami, and our two dogs, Maddi and Ruby. We own a store in the Fairhaven neighborhood, the historic part of town. The gallery is called Whimsey and offers handpicked jewelry, art and gifts from a constantly evolving group of unique artisans. We proudly feature many local and regional independent artists. The gallery is located at 1200 10th Street, Suite 104 right across from the Village Green in the heart of Fairhaven. Please feel free to visit our website (http://www.shopwhimsey.com) or if you are in Bellingham stop by the shop.

My main passion in life is running. I have been a runner for over 20 years now. I started out as a member of the Cascade Striders when I was 11 as a high jumper and a sprinter. Then while running for Kamiakin Jr. High I moved up to the 400 then to the 800. By the time I got to Redmond High School I had given up the high jump (except for one meet my senior year) and was purely an 800 runner. I also ran cross county all three years at Redmond. My senior year (1991) we actually took second at State behind a Mead team that propably would have beaten a lot college teams. After high school I went on to run both track and cross country at Western Washington University (where I fell in love with both Bellingham and Cami).

These days I continue to race as much as possible (you can get an idea of how my racing has been going by checking out my Athlinks page) and put in more miles than ever. Also, I earned a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification. Recently I started working with Fairhaven Runners (a great running store in Bellingham) to start up a Fairhaven Runners Racing Team. Our goal is to bring runners together who are interested in the competitive side of running and looking to get faster. Hopefully we will be able to put teams together to compete in track and cross country as well as road racing. Currently we get together every Tuesday evening for a track workout (if you are interested in joining our team please contact me for more information).

Steve, thanks for the welcome comment you placed on my web site. Your site is an awesome overview of the XC and running scene in the NW!

I will hopefully soon post an overview of my assessment of doing XC relative to other sorts of races.

      Hi David,
Thanks for stopping by the site. I’m looking forward to reading about what you thought of XC. Hopefully I’ll see you at some races. – Steve
